2006 Sunnfjordlaget Stevne

Come and enjoy a weekend filled with fun. Our Meeting will be in Decorah Iowa June 30th and July 1st. Registration begins on Friday at 10am. Room keys will be able to be picked up then. Our room accommodations will be in Dieseth Hall. (The telephones located in the residence hall rooms will not be available to our group. Phone cards can be purchased in the bookstore or bring your own cell phone.) (www.luther.edu)

Friday afternoon, Marla Klocke will be talking to us about the Vesterheim Museum. We will also tour the college's planetarium. Jerry Rosholt will speak on Friday evening about Norwegians in the Civil War. He wrote the book "Ole goes to War." He has also been instrumental in assembling the database, available on Vesterheim's website concerning Scandinavians in the Civil War. (www.vesterheim.org)

Saturday morning, we will be touring the Bily Clocks Museum and Antonin Dvorak Exhibit in Spillville Iowa. Transportation is provided. A business meeting and Memorial Service is also planned for early afternoon. Our banquet will be a Norwegian buffet followed by the Grand Concert sponsored by the Luren Singers.

Our stevne is taking place at the same time as the Sangerfest hosted by the Luren Singers. There will be a concert on Thursday night at 7pm called the Parade of Choruses, which the public is welcomed to attend. Tickets are $5.

Decorah hosts an abundance of places to see including Vesterheim Museum, the Porter House Museum, Hotel Winneshiek and Seed Savers Exchange Inc. On the way down, you may want to stop in Burr Oaks to see the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum. Log on to www.decoraharea.com to see all the possibilities.

Genealogy assistance is available at all stevne meetings. Come early with all your material to allow enough time to receive efficient help. Members, remember if you have materials to share, please bring it along. It is most appreciated!

 


Sunnfjordlaget Plans 2005

The 2005 Stevne wwas hosted by our Vice President Dick Rem and his wife Darleen. The place is Stoughton, Wisconsin, which is about 20 miles southeast of Madison, Wisconsin. The Stevne will be June 17 and 18. Meetings will be held at The Stoughton Senior Center (248 West Main). The hotel is the Chose Family Inn (1124 West Main Street). Friday Afternoon June l:
Registration starts at 1:00pm at the Senior Center. Opening ceremonies at 1:30pm followed by a "Historical Presentation of our Sunnijordlag. We will then have a coffee and snack time (Koffee og Snakke Tid). Following the break will be a tour of the Stoughton Historical Museum as well as a Genealogy Session (Our Genealogist will be giving hands on help at this session).

Friday Evening:
Norske music in song followed by "Hjemkost - A Dream Come True". This is a power point presentation by Tom Asp sharing his families amazing sage of building a Viking ship and sailing it from Hawly' Minnesota to Bergen Norway.

Saturday June l:
There will be a morning bus tour to the Vesterheim Genealogical Center in Madison. (Vesterheim is considered the most comprehensive Norwegian Genealogical Resource Center in the entire US.) A tour of the State Capitol will follow.

Saturday Afternoon:
After lunch our group will conduct a business meeting and memorial service. Then a walking tour of Historical Stoughton or shopping can be had.

Saturday Evening:
Our banquet will be held at 6pm. "An Evening of Norse Delight" with Dan at the Grand. Followed by "Folklore of Norwegian Trolls and Nisse". (Don't forget to bring your troll or Nisse for our Ugliest and Happiest troll or Nisse contest. Prizes will be awarded that evening.) Bunads and other traditional items are also encouraged!
